There is a growing urgency to take action if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate breakdown but we need your help.
We need more trees
Whilst we must reduce carbon emissions as much as possible by transitioning away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, we must also deal with the residual carbon emissions that we cannot eliminate completely, by using carbon capture techniques to remove global warming gases from the atmosphere, and helping the biosphere to heal itself.
One significant way that you can help eliminate your own residual carbon emissions is by planting trees, which also brings additional benefits:
Improved human health and well-being
Improved air, soil and water quality
Employment and commercial opportunities
At 13% woodland cover the UK has roughly one third the European average. In North Yorkshire woodland cover is less than the UK average at about 8%.
The Rotary Club of Harrogate and Zero Carbon Harrogate have teamed up with a tree planting carbon capture scheme. Currently planting is in the Nidderdale AONB, with 17,700 trees planted so far of a target of 25,000.
We are appealing to our supporters to help us reach our target.
Specifically we are looking to fund 1,100 trees for the next stage of our planting, which we hope to do between the 19-26 March 2019. However the number of trees that we can plant in 2019 will depend upon how much money we can raise. At the moment we have funds for about half the number of trees required and if we do not get any more money in, we will simply have to spread the planting over several years.
You can find full details of the scheme and how to donate here
With very best wishes to you from the Zero Carbon Harrogate committee, for 2019 and thank you for your support.
