What does the future hold for the Harrogate District in a world where climate change is already starting to impact our lives? What would it look like if we were able to limit emissions and achieve our zero carbon vision?
In this workshop James Mackay from the University of Leeds will help to answer these questions by painting a picture of a low carbon future, which he sees as a sustainable and prosperous society.
"It’s not a fantasy utopia – there are still conflicts and political problems: it represents a wildly optimistic but plausible vision of where we might end up if we can solve the problems resulting from climate change impacts. Importantly, the vision doesn’t shy away from imagining the kind of climate change impacts that scientists have predicted for the next hundred years or so."
James is a CUSP (Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity) Fellow, artist and science communicator who regularly collaborates with researchers in many different fields to bring new discoveries and ideas to life. He is the manager of two research council funded Centres for Doctoral Training in Low Carbon Technologies and Bioenergy and drives the centres’ outreach programmes enabling PhD students to engage with the public on subjects such as climate change and other environmental issues and the advantages and disadvantages of various energy technologies. James is also the editor of the book 'Dreams of a Low Carbon Future'.
The CUSP's overall aim is to explore the economic, ecological, social and governance dimensions of sustainable prosperity and to make concrete recommendations to government, business and civil society in pursuit of it.
This workshop is part of a Royal Academy of Engineering funded project to engage the public in science and engineering related to climate change and renewable energy.
