Free of Charge

Zero Carbon Harrogate and Harrogate College are providing this event free of charge, to provide our local building industry with the knowledge and understanding of what retrofitting is, why it’s important and how individuals and businesses can gain the skills needed to meet the growing demand from homeowners to retrofit their homes.

In June 2019, the UK became the first major economy in the world to legally commit to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Retrofitting the UK’s existing housing stock will help reach this goal by reducing the energy needed to heat a home and providing renewable, low-carbon energy.

Retrofitting homes is typically about insulating all parts of a home to high standards, reducing air leakage, improving mechanical ventilation and installing low carbon heating systems (e.g., heat pumps).

Harrogate College are developing courses that will provide our local building industry with all the skills they need to carry out these retrofitting services. This event will also provide an opportunity to feed back to Harrogate College what you think would be beneficial to incorporate into the courses and help shape the future of our district.

We have three highly knowledgeable speakers with industry experience, who will cover a broad variety of topics, including:

  • Net zero emissions policy and how homes fall into this

  • Minimum energy efficiency standards for private rented homes

  • An overview of whole house retrofit and typical measures

  • Low-carbon heating installations, including heat pumps

  • An overview of the PAS standards

  • The role of the retrofit assessor and retrofit coordinator

  • An overview of the Construction Leadership Council assessment of the number of homes that need retrofitting and tradespeople required to deliver the work

  • Current supply and demand of retrofitting services in the Harrogate District

  • Work winning, and providing retrofit contracting services
