Climate Change and Peace: A Conversation for Our Times

By Sunita Soundur, ZCH's Climate Action Coordinator

As wars and global unrest continue to dominate the headlines, a special event in Harrogate will shine a light on the powerful links between climate change and peace – and how local communities can respond with hope and action.

The event, titled “Setting the Climate for Peace: How climate change impacts peace – and what we can do about it in Harrogate”, takes place on Tuesday 16 September, 6–8pm at Creative Harrogate, and is hosted by us, Zero Carbon Harrogate in partnership with the United Nations Association (UNA) Harrogate. The evening will be led by Clive Wilson, Chair of UNA Harrogate and author of Leading Beyond Sustainability and is part of the town’s Week of Peace.

The event will bring people together to ask: How can we build a future that is both sustainable and peaceful? And what role can communities like ours play in reducing conflict risks while also cutting carbon and protecting nature? Why?

Around the world, the impacts of the climate crisis are already being felt – from extreme weather events to pressures on food, water and natural resources. These stresses don’t just threaten ecosystems, they also affect the stability of communities and the wellbeing of future generations.

Expect thought-provoking insights from speakers, opportunities to share ideas with one another, and a chance to reflect on how climate action can also be a path to greater social harmony – something we think we can all agree we absolutely need right now.

📅 Date: Tuesday 16th September

📍 Location: Creative Harrogate, 2 Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, HG1 1EL

🕕 Time: 6-8pm

This promises to be an inspiring evening, reminding us that tackling climate change isn’t only about emissions – it’s also about the kind of fairer, safer world we want to create together. And that wherever conflict is happening in the world, we can all do something to rise to the challenges of today.

Even small actions matter – and together our local efforts can promote peace here, and in other parts of the world.

Everyone is welcome, and we’d love to see you there!
