Five Million Electric Bus Kilometres: A Milestone for Sustainable Transport

As the world marks World Environment Day, there is good news closer to home:

Transdev's electric bus fleet in Harrogate and Keighley is set to surpass an impressive five million kilometres of zero-emission travel this month!

Since introducing electric buses in 2024, Transdev has invested heavily in cleaner public transport, bringing dozens of battery-powered vehicles to local routes. These buses are helping to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and provide quieter, more comfortable journeys for passengers, and is something we at Zero Carbon Harrogate are incredibly proud to boast about.

The impact has been significant. In Harrogate alone, electric buses are estimated to save more than 5,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. That's equivalent to the annual electricity use of around 1,000 homes or taking millions of miles of petrol car travel off the road.

This milestone highlights the important role that public transport can play in tackling climate change. While reducing emissions from cars remains essential, improving and investing in attractive, reliable public transport gives more people a practical alternative for everyday journeys.

The transition to electric buses is not the complete answer to our climate challenges, but it is 100% an important step towards creating cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities.

Reaching five million electric kilometres shows what can be achieved when investment, innovation and climate ambition come together.

As communities across North Yorkshire work towards a lower-carbon future, this achievement is a reminder that progress is possible – and already happening on our streets every day.

If you're interested in seeing more sustainable transport around Harrogate and Knaresborough, please get in touch about volunteering. We're looking for people who can drive our Walk to School, Car Free Fridays and other transport work.
