ZCH Working Group: Schools

Our schools working group aims to encourage sustainability in schools across the Harrogate District. Our main work consists of promoting our behavioural change campaigns Walk to School Day and Car Free Friday that tackle emissions from the school commute. Our work is in collaboration with The Harrogate Bus Company and North Yorkshire County Council.

So far we have engaged with schools across Boroughbridge, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Nidderdale, and Ripon, and the initiatives have been strongly supported by Ripon Together volunteers, local sustainability company Flotilla, local councillors, and Mayors. Harrogate Town AFC’s Harry Gator mascot and North Yorkshire Council’s Spike the Road Safety Hedgehog have also added fun and excitement to the event days, motivating students to participate. There is some obvious overlap with the transport group.

We have also partnered with the Northern Star Academy Trust to establish a School Leaders Sustainability Roundtable, which aims to provide a forum for discussions on key climate themes and how we can take action.

Mission

The mission is to build upon the success we've already achieved, increase the number of schools and students taking part in our Walk to School campaigns and engage the wider community in active travel.

Vision

The vision is for all schools across the Harrogate District to partner with Zero Carbon Harrogate in some way to reduce their emissions, be it by signing up for a Walk to School Event, or something else!

Main Areas of Focus

1

Walk to School

Walk to School Days take place once every half-term, to encourage students, staff and parents to engage in good transport habits to reduce emissions, improve air quality, reduce congestion and improve pupil health and wellbeing.

2

Car Free Fridays

Whether you're a resident, commuter or student, this initiative encourages us to do our bit to reduce emissions, reduce congestion and improve air quality by encouraging people to go car free every Friday.

3

Sustainability Roundtable

We have partnered with the Northern Star Academy Trust to establish a School Leaders Sustainability Roundtable which aims to provide a forum for discussions on key climate themes and how we can take action.
